Tarmon National School is situated 4 km north-east of Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. It is a Roman Catholic primary school under the patronage of the Bishop of Elphin. Our school promotes a Catholic ethos and values while respecting the rights and beliefs of every person, regardless of denomination.
At Tarmon N.S., we strive to nurture each pupil spiritually, socially, and academically. We recognise every child as a unique individual with distinct interests, talents, and abilities. The school provides a safe, caring, and inclusive community environment where each child is valued and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

Tarmon School through the Years
The present Tarmon school building dates back to 1890, though records suggest that a school existed in the area as early as the 1860s. For over 150 years, past pupils and staff have contributed to a proud legacy of academic, social, and sporting achievements.
The development of Tarmon N.S. over the years has been greatly supported by the local community. In 2009, Miss Reba Walker, owner of the adjoining land, generously donated 5,000 m² for use as a sports field. An extension was later built on this land, and following her passing in 2011, a further parcel was purchased from her estate at a very reasonable price.
In 2016, the O’Rourke family kindly donated a substantial plot of land to the school, allowing for the creation of an Astro Turf pitch and a school garden. The school community remains deeply grateful to both the O’Rourke and Walker families for their amazing generosity and kindness over the years.
Over the years, the school has continued to expand and modernise.
In 1998, the Board of Management together with the Office of Public Works built a new Infant classroom and staff room were built, and the old Infant room was converted into internal toilets.
In 2003, a new classroom, resource room, staff room, and multi-purpose room were officially opened.
In 2009, a new school gym, an additional classroom, a staff room, a resource room, and a refurbished computer room were added, funded with the help and generosity of the local community in Tarmon and Castlerea, for which we are extremely grateful.
In 2018, a new building for children with autism and an additional mainstream classroom were completed. This facility includes three autism classrooms with changing areas, a sensory room, a central activities area, a staff room, a mainstream classroom and a meeting room.
In 2022, Tarmon N.S. was allocated funding from the Department of Education to build two further autism classrooms and three mainstream classrooms, along with ancillary facilities. These developments will provide a more spacious and suitable learning environment for all our pupils, and we look forward to their completion in the near future.
Tarmon Autism Centre
The Autism Centre at Tarmon N.S., established in 2014, has enriched the learning experience and social awareness of our entire school community and it has brought much joy and benefit to all. Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.
Currently, 30 autistic pupils attend our Autism Centre, engaging in a range of exciting learning experiences each day. They are supported by five class teachers and twelve Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), who work together to ensure that every child can learn, grow, and thrive in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
